User tests in a lab (5-6 testers) compared to a digital user test with Teston:
Planning a user test takes time and coordination. It’s common to set aside 5-10% of the total budget to pay for project management.
This is one of the most critical parts of a usertest. Testers should be recruited from the right target audience. Normally this is done by an external recruitment company that charges a considerable amount for the job.
The test script needs to be created, and the client needs to confirm that they’re happy with it. The result is a document that the moderator uses to complete the test.

All of the testers need to be welcomed when they arrive at the test venue, and they’re typically offered a snack and something to drink. It’s important that they are relaxed and comfortable.
One meeting room is required to complete the actual test. In addition, another room is needed for one or more observers/note-takers. The observation meeting room is typically prepared with coffee, water and snacks if many people are observing and taking notes.
The person moderating each test typically needs to set aside a whole working day to prepare and complete 5 user tests.
Observers needs to take notes during the test and give feedback to the moderator. An observer typically needs to set aside a whole day to take notes for 5 user tests. Often several people will take part in observing and note-taking throughout the day.

Results are typically summarised based on insights from the video recordings and notes from the observer(s). Sometimes this summary is just a cleaned up version of the observer’s notes. Other times, it’s a complete report with conclusions and quotes from the testers.

The table above displays activities and estimated time spent for a typical user test in a lab (with 5-6 testers), compared to a digital user test with Teston.
A tool like Teston provides valuable insight and empathy for users that we don’t meet face to face. This, in combination with how quickly we receive results, ensures that we can innovate faster than before.
